Here are 12 strong St. Patrick’s Day-adjacent reads, a mix of fiction and nonfiction, all with strong Irish themes, history, or St. Patrick himself. I’ll mark which are fiction/nonfiction and why they’re good picks for the month. Happy reading!

FICTION

TWIST by Colum McCann (2025)
Genre: Contemporary literary fiction
Why read it: Stylistically rich new novel from a major Irish writer, mixing lyrical prose with multiple voices and timelines. Perfect if you want a fresh, talked-about Irish-centric view of connection, memory, and the fractures of modern life.

GALWAY BAY by Mary Pat Kelly (2009)
Genre:  Historical fiction
Why read it: Sweeping multigenerational saga starting in 19th‑century Ireland during the Great Famine and continuing into the Irish‑American experience. Rich in Irish culture, folklore, and Catholic faith—perfect if you want something epic and emotional around Irish heritage.

BROOKLYN by Colm Tóibín (2009)
Genre: Literary fiction
Why read it: A young Irish woman emigrates from small‑town Ireland to 1950s New York. Quiet, beautifully written, and full of that bittersweet pull between Ireland and the wider world.

IRELAND by Frank Delaney (2005)
Genre: Historical / mythic fiction
Why read it: A storyteller travels Ireland sharing tales that span thousands of years, weaving myth, history, and national identity. Feels like being told fireside stories on St. Patrick’s night.

THE LIGHT OF TARA: A NOVEL OF SAINT PATRICK by John Desjarlais (1998)
Genre: Historical Christian fiction
Why read it: A dramatized life of St. Patrick, blending legend with documented history. Good if you specifically want Patrick’s story in a narrative, character-driven way.

THE HEART’S INVISIBLE FURIES by John Boyne (2017)
Genre: Contemporary / historical literary fiction
Why read it: Follows a gay Irish man across decades of 20th‑century Ireland. Sharp, funny, and devastating; gives a vivid sense of Irish society, religion, and change over time.

NONFICTION: History, Biography, Culture

ST. PATRICK OF IRELAND: A BIOGRAPHY by Philip Freeman (2004)
Genre: Historical biography
Why read it: Accessible, well‑researched biography using Patrick’s own writings and historical context. If you want a clear, modern, nonfiction account of the real man behind the legends, this is a great one.

HOW THE IRISH SAVED CIVILIZATION by Thomas Cahill (1995)
Genre: Popular history
Why read it: Tells how Irish monks preserved key classical texts after the fall of Rome. It’s lively, not dry, and ties beautifully into the idea of Ireland’s spiritual and intellectual legacy around the time of Patrick. (This was required reading in my Irish History college courses.)

IRELAND: A HISTORY by Thomas Bartlett (2010)
Genre: Broad Irish history
Why read it: A solid single-volume overview from ancient times to the modern era. Ideal if St. Patrick’s Day makes you want to understand the broader sweep of Irish history beyond just the saint.

SAY NOTHING: A TRUE STORY OF MURDER AND MEMORY IN NORTHERN IRELAND by Patrick Radden Keefe (2018)
Genre: Narrative nonfiction / true crime / history
Why read it: Gripping account of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. It’s darker than most, but incredibly illuminating about modern Irish politics, identity, and trauma.

MCCARTHY’S BAR: A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY IN IRELAND by Pete McCarthy (1998)
Type: Travel memoir
Why read it: Funny, warm, and observant travelogue as the author wanders Irish pubs, villages, and coastlines. Light and very readable—perfect if you want something humorous and atmospheric for St. Patrick’s Day.
